Expertise as a Writing Coach
With her help, Erin’s students have won numerous state and national awards. Erin’s coaching style unique is her ability to recognize and zoom in on existing moments within a student’s writing and restructure the story around. She understands story-telling structures, so she can build them and rearrange them like puzzles. Her suggestions maximize an essays emotional effect while managing to preserve writers’ voices (and self-confidence). Students say they walk away from coaching sessions with Erin feeling that they’ve dramatically improved their essays with minimal revision.
Erin as a writing coach won’t just find your spelling errors, add a few commas and call it a day.
One of the gifts she has is working with people who will declare, “I have no idea what to write or how to start.” She starts from the ground up. She’ll consider your audience, restructure entire paragraphs, and give lots of feedback, suggestions, and ideas. The result is a writing piece that students have ownership of and feel proud of.
In high school journalism and yearbook classes, I spent many hours editing stories of staff members. I learned how to edit by having my stories edited by Erin. She gave me one-on-one feedback to advance my writing.
I remember going into her office with yearbook stories that I didn’t feel were top-quality pieces. She would sit down and read the copy with me. Then she asked me probing questions – What? Why? How? She encouraged me to think below the surface in order to form a compelling story. From conversations with her and the questions she asked me, I left the room with a better sense of what details I needed to find. In turn, I was able to do the same for staff members.
Erin is a great editor and writing coach because she makes you actually think outside of the box (which was frustrating at times when I didn’t think my brain could think anymore). But she does it in a way that doesn’t leave you hopeless. Rather, I always felt a new sense of encouragement and inspiration after our one-on-one sessions. She helped transform mediocre writing into interesting and meaningful copy.
Erin has worked for nearly two decades as a writing instructor. She has helped countless high school and college students find and develop their voices and personal styles.
She’s an excellent revisionist and content editor–the best I’ve worked with. She is a clever and encouraging coach who tenaciously and sincerely helps writers to become the best they can become.
